Position The tri-county area surrounding and including the city of Detroit is home to nearly half a million seniors. Too many of them are living near or below the poverty level and need help from organizations like ours. The Senior Outreach Program of the Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan was born out of the pandemic and the need for seniors to remain home for their health and safety. It started as a grocery delivery program but uncovered a great need for help by so many of our seniors. The program is in the process of blossoming into a full outreach program. The future of the Senior Outreach Program includes chore services, transportation, case management, and a robust referral program. We are looking to engage the local parishes of the Archdiocese of Detroit (AOD) and the greater community to build a network of volunteers dedicated to helping seniors live independently and with dignity in their own homes. We are looking for an individual to help lay the groundwork for policies and processes for our network of volunteers. As these are put in place, we can begin using volunteers across metro Detroit to help seniors stay in their own homes by bringing goods and services directly to them. Our volunteers will help transport them to and from important appointments. Most of all, our volunteers will strive to make the lives of every senior we service better in whatever ways we can. This VISTA position is a part of Catholic Charities USA’s Family Strengthening Program, a national intermediary project. As a member, you will meet virtually with VISTA Leaders and other VISTAs serving throughout the country, all focused on alleviating poverty.
